Wondering about clematis grown through evergreens

I am considering buying a Pink Champagne or Ville de Lyon Clematis to plant under a small evergreen tree. The evergreen is about 6 feet tall and 3 feet wide. I'm wondering if a clematis would overtake the evergreen. I don't want to kill the tree that is my support. I know that both types of clematis have the capacity to grow higher than the tree is tall. Is that a recipe for disaster? Is it okay to prune the vine as it grows if it is overtaking the tree too much?

Also, I would be buying a clematis that is containerized in a container that is about 1.5 gallons. Is that safe to plant in June or July? Here, the temperatures have already reached the low 90's on occasion. I understand that a container plant can be planted at any point in the season but I want to give my clematis a good chance at survival.
