Yes, you should cut it back and the plant should be fine long term. Especially if you planted it three to five inches deeper than it was in the nursery pot.

It is very common for type II large flowered Clematis to behave this way. Cutting them back when planting really helps.

Thank you buyorsell-I planted them all about 4 inches deeper and composted really good. So I will cut it down. Since these are my first clems I was going for type III's but I saw Ramona in bloom and loved it. (sigh)

Should I cut them all? They have such healthy vines already....the others are type IIIs.

You don't need to cut the type IIIs until next spring. Then cut them all even Ramona back hard.

I just spent the early part of the garden rounds cleaning up my sad looking 8y/o Ramona - she's actually bouncing back after the iron deficiency treatment some weeks ago.

I know I should have pruned her hard after the first surge of blooms but she continuous to produce - be they smaller, even the leaves were smaller & twines thinner ~ but I didn't have the heart! Despite the time it took me to clean her up w/ care this AM ~ still don't have the guts!
I bookmarked this thread & just now re-read ~ I ask: should I or shouldn't I at this point? I have Sentimental Blue Platycodon at her foot beautifully blooming & (tallish) Shell Pink on the other side ~ should cover-up Ramona. I guess I need a push!!!
