Clematis overgrew trellis, now a tangled mess at top. Now what?

So, I have a type 3 (fall-flowering) clematis that really took off this year. Last year I planted it and it took all summer to reach the top of the trellis, so I left it to grow fairly straight up this year. It has already reached the top of my 7 foot trellis, and it's now woven together to form a gigantic, tangled mess at the top. And it's only early June!

What should I do? Should i leave it alone? Can I cut out some of the tangles? Can I just cut out the entire tangled mess and not lose my flowers? At the rate it's gorwing and tangling I'll have a small tree at the top of my trellis.

Next year I will weave it more aggressively through the lower levels, but I don't want to lose all the flowers this year.

Thanks!
