Can this clematis be saved?

I am posting this for my sister, who is concerned she may have sent her white autumn clematis to an early demise.

After a couple of years of prolific growth this clematis needed to be moved slightly. So, my sister dug it up and moved the root ball about 18" to the side of the original site, leaving the branches on their trellis. She did this early in the spring.

A portion of the clematis has died; it has been slow with this season's growth; and now the tips of the green branches are browning.

Any idea what might be going on with this plant? Any sort of coddling that might help it through this troubled time?

It takes a while for the plant to recover and regrow the roots that were severed during the digging. Once it settles in, it will start growing again. The only coddling it needs is don't let it dry out. I usually give it about 5-6 gallons of water once a week when it's hot unless there is ample rainfall. Put mulch over the area to help keep the water at the surface from drying out.

It's pretty hard to kill a sweet autumn. My bet is that it'll be just fine. As janet says, keep it well watered this year.
