Another question: why did my clematis die?

I had a clematis which I believe was a C. macropetala (it arrived mislabeled) and which grew and flowered every year, looking perfectly contented, until this last winter, when it died. Why? It didn't appear sick or puny, it was not treated any differently than usual, no herbicide touched it or anything around it. Fall through spring we get a lot of precipitation and this winter was extremely wet. I didn't give it more fertilizer than a handful of mulch, but this has never bothered it. The plant was probably about seven years old. It was growing just in front of a masonry wall, sandwiched between it and a variegated ligustrum which has grown to a robust shrub. The only thing I can imagine is that the ligustrum crowded it out, or that it succumbed to the extraordinarily wet winter; but I would like your ideas.

Thanks for your feedback.
