Over Pruned Wilted Clematis

I believe I over pruned my jackmanii clematis which was wilting. Instead of cutting it just above the last two healthy buds, I cut it about 3 inches above the ground so now I only have a woody stem. I have absolutely no idea why I did such a thing. Will I ever get any healthy shoots or have I pretty much ruined it?

It will probably be just fine. The woody stems may sprout and you will likely get sprouts up from the crown.

I have cut at least ten Clems back this far with no deaths.
