Question about potting a clem

I'm comfused. When planting do you bury all your new clematis in the original pots or just the small ones? Do you ever take it out of the pot? When you have a patio clem and you live in a region that freezes, do you bury it, pot and all, to wait out the winter? If not, how do you overwinter it?

All of my clematis are planted in the ground except for some mail ordered ones that were really, really small that I potted into gallons.

I do not sink my gallon pots into the ground though some do.

Many Clematis are hardy to zone 4, though if they are in pots that makes them less hardy.
