How close to plant two clematis to climb on a fence?

Brand new to planting clematis, so any help will be appreciated. I have seen many pictures of contrasting clematis planted together, and I'm ready to dig. I just purchased blue angel and polish spirit, to grow along a fence. How far apart do I space them?

You can put them as close as two feet but Polish Spirit is a monster so you could space them as much as six feet apart and they'd probably still blend together.
