Tammy, there is only one seed on the seedhead, the rest is just fluff
For the seed to be viable you have to allow it to ripen on the vine, it will turn brown and fall off with the slightest touch.

Thanks for the pic. I didnt realize there was only one per head. but why cant I find anything larger than those hluffy things after the seed head turns to brown fluff? When I pluck the dried heads, everything looks the same.

There can be more per head.

There is a viable seed there, lower left. Leave it until it is ripe. Check all the seed heads and collect as many as you can.

I have pulled about a dozen heads that were ready on 3 plants, and didnt find anything other than the fluff. Are there usually at least one per head?

Sometimes there won't be any seeds on a seedhead.

It takes a long time for the seeds to reach full size and ripen. It's too soon to be harvesting seeds.

The fluff can stay on the seedhead for a long time even with the ripened seeds.

I wondered around looking at the different seed heads, and I have it figured out now. Thanks so much for your patience and the links.

Hybrid Clematis are not something easily grown from seed. Trading seeds for them is likely going to be a lesson in futility.

Some of the species can be grown from seed though.
