One of the best descriptions I've read about this cultivar is that "the flowers go through many stages creating a different look in each stage". Double flowered clematis are a bit unique in this regard and the opening of the flowers to their full form does offer a range of coloring. The fluffy reddish interior is more pronounced when the flower is not fully developed. Then the center becomes a much paler color with a more yellow-green boss.

It is also important to keep in mind that flower colors seldom photograph true, especially the blues and purples. A Google image search on Multi Blue produces a huge range of variations :-)

Thank you, gardengal. I have no idea when to expect my Multi-blue to actually bloom (no time soon, I'm sure), but when it does, it will be interesting to see the color changes. I look forward to it.
