Avalanche Clematis dying?

I fell in love with an Avalanche Clematis about 3 months ago and planted it on a new trellis. It took a bit of time getting settled, but suddenly began sending out a lot of new growth. This past weekend I noticed the bottom leaves are brown up to about 8 inches from the base. The upper part still looks healthy, but I think it is going south quickly.

I have several clematis in my yard, but was attracted to this one because the leaves were so very different and the flowers so abundant. I hate to loose this one so early - and frankly I don't know where my nursery receipt is! This doesn't look like wilt because the whole plant is not affected. Any suggestions / ideas for this species? Help - I think time is short!
