Pinching, etc.

This spring, after reading about it on this forum, I've been liberally pinching back my clems' tender shoots to encourage root growth and branching out. On some of them, it's worked like a charm; they've produced two sets of leaves to replace the one set almost immediately after the pinching. But with others, it seems to have stopped them in their tracks. My Alabast, for example, hasn't put out any new growth since I pinched it. Are there clems that *shouldn't* be pinched?

Second question: I've run out of places to accommodate clems that will grow 10 or 12 feet tall, yet I still have spots against a 6-foot fence that need something planted in them. I want to put clems there, of course. How easy is it to train them to grow horizontally? Or is there a good way to discourage them from reaching their full height?
