Confused about blooming times and pruning of Bourbon and Firework

I keep reading that the both Bourbon and Fireworks are in Prune Group 2 and that plants in this group bloom on "old growth" in spring and "new growth" in fall. I planted 3 Bourbons and 2 Fireworks in May 2009 and had problems with stems breaking and/or getting chewed off initially. Actually, at the end of last summer, all 5 of them were cut to ground level and I didn't know what to expect this summer. Well, this summer, there were chutes coming up from the ground everywhere! In mid to late June, all 5 plants had prolific blooms. How did I get this spring bloom when there was no "old growth" since they started out the year cut to ground level? All blooms were on "new growth" since "new growth" is all I had. Now, the blooms are done and I don't know if I should prune now or not. Will I get another "new growth" bloom yet this year?
