could've sworn it was wilt

I have a snow queen clematis that I was sure had wilt. I checked on it a week ago and noticed that overnight it developed black and brown splotches (along with some wilting) down the whole length of the plant, though not on every leaf. Since then nothing has happened. Based on what I've read, I'd expect it to be dead right now. It's stopped growing, but the leaf decay hasn't progressed. Any ideas as to what happened?

BTW...It happened on the morning after a 95 degree day. The plant gets about five hours of afternoon sun, is mulched and has a hosta planted in front of it. The ground was still moist (not soggy) under the mulch.
