Do I remove side shoots at planting?

I just planted Frankie who had been in a pot for 9 months and had tons of foliage. I cut each of the many stems back to 1-2 buds. Most of the buds have side shoots coming out the bud; in some cases a couple of inches long. Should I leave those side shoots alone or cut them off?
