Am I making a mistake? Bboy, are you there?

I read flowerfan's method of planting clematis in five gallon buckets to protect them from tree roots. I said, YES!!! I have an old, spindly Mock Orange tree (no longer a bush) that I wanted to use for support for the clematis to cover up it's spindly arms and legs. Right nearby is a cedar tree with those horrible roots. So, I got the hole dug (2 feet deep) and the bottomless 5-gallon bucked in place when I realized I had bought a 'Montana'. What kind of root system does the Montana have and will it work in the bottomless bucket. All my other trees are in too much shade I think and don't know where else I would put it in the ground.

Gardening is certainly a 'learning experience' and I'm so thankful for this website.
