pruning technique question

This is going to sound simple, but I keep reading about "pruning after a bloom" to further growth. Where am I supposed to make the cut? If a flower has just bloomed, it's sitting there looking nice. I assume I'm not cutting that flower off right away. I've heard this not just with Clematis but other flowers as well. Any help is appreciated.

This refers to after the blooms have faded and the main flush is over. Where to cut is different for different plants. Some you cut down to the basal growth. Others are cut along the stem to where there are new flower buds forming. For clematis you can cut the stem to one third to one half its length.
