Browning vines

I have some type 2 clems that have either wilted or experienced summer brown-off. In several cases, I have painstakingly cut off the affected vines, but I seem to always end up cutting perfectly good vines as well. I'm wondering how important it is to get it all off. It looks bad, but I could fix that by cutting off only the brown leaves and leaving the remaining green ones to cover the stems. Will that cause wilt to eventually affect the rest of the plant? I don't think the brown-off is contagious, but I'm not sure about wilt.
