are clematis plants top-heavy?

I'm looking for a vine to cover a fence and the side of a shed in my yard. The clematis is a contender but I would like something lush and verdant but I also want something that grows uniformly (more or less) thick on it's trellis/fence.

If it's not clear what I'm meaning, I don't want something with a mostly uniform thickness all the way up the side of the fence.

I've seen alot of pictures of clematis that are very top heavy. They show almost all of their growth at the top of their trellis with the bottom being very sparse. Is this typical or just a factor of how you trim and train your plant?
