evergreen clematis

User

I have an armandii growing in a wine barrel, it is about 5 years old. It does okay, not great, where it is and receives sun for 3 hours during the later part of the day, so very hot sun and shade the rest of the day. Should I cut it back in the fall and re-pot it so the roots are deeper? When I planted it I was not aware clematis should go in deeper. The vines grow up over a obelisk into a tree and around my front door but some of the vines look like they are dying. I cut all the vines back to the ground 2 years ago and it came back very vigorously but now looks like it is struggling and the vines near the ground are very woody and are splitting and peeling. I'm just wondering if I should try to save this one or start over with a new plant. Planting into the ground is not an option. Thank you for your help....
