Yet Another Newbie

Well, I've been getting my hands dirty for awhile, but new to Clematis. My neighbor has one on her mailbox that is gorgeous in early summer but looks rather scary after that. I have 2 a pink one (name escapes me) and Snow Queen. I bought an obelisk for Snow Queen and will get it in the ground this weekend. I've got clay so I'm mixing in potting mix and a bit of compost. Does that work? I'm not expecting much growth but want it to get settled before winter. I know I don't need the obelisk, but it will keep me motivated :) Are there other things I should know about coaxing these plants through Fall and Winter?
