severe pruning or cutting back of clematis

We bought a house in central coastal California with an existing clematis vine growing on an arbor. We had to remove the arbor because the structure was rotted out and we cut back the clematis vine to about 6 feet tall. That was about 6 weeks ago and now several vegetative shoots have sprouted near the top of the vine. The question is - can we cut back the vine again to about 2 feet tall? We want to start training it onto new structure. Will the vine sprout again if it is cut back that much? Thanks for the response.
