How to plant 2 clematis together

I've seen pictures where two plants are planted together and form a lovely color combination. How close together can the plants be spaced? For example, I have a narrow trellis ...can I plant two plants side-by-side?

Hi Cindy, I have wondered that too, although for a different reason: I would like to have a sequence of bloom. I'll be watching this post to see if anyone can give us guidance.

I have some a foot apart. Only time will tell if this was foolish.....

Some are too vigorous to attempt to put this close though.
