planting clematis with peonies and iris

Hi!

I'm hoping some of you from this forum can help me. First, I bought Duchess of Edinburgh this spring and planted it. I cut it down to encourage root development. It started growing back but wilted and died (I think because I planted it beside sweet peas which are heavy feeders). I want to plant it behind 2 year old peonies, can I do this or will the same thing happen?

Second, I have an 2 yr old Ville de Lyon, and was hoping to plant a reblooming iris in front of it. I am hesitant because the root system of the Iris is insane and I don't want it to bother the Clematis. If any of you have any feedback I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

Wilting and dying is very common and it likely isn't really dead and the sweet peas likely didn't have anything to do with it.

Almost all of my clematis are planted in mixed beds with trees, shrubs, bulbs, perennials and grasses. As long as you make sure they get enough water they are fine. They do not need to be all by themselves. I have some within two feet of reblooming bearded iris and peonies.

I've got Arabella within about 6" of an established peony. I planted her there to give it some color during its long off season, and she blooms fine. I also have lots of others planted close to roses, shrubs and other perennials.
