Pruning question & Sweet Autumn question.

I searched thru the threads and didn't find anything like this, but I have a question about pruning my clematis. Usually I just chop it off about a foot high, does well, blooms nicely. It's got probably 20 vines coming up from the ground, all the same type. Has anyone tried double pruning? Cut it back in the early spring, wait a month, and then cut half of them back again. Would this delay blooming on those double pruned vines, for another month? Lengthen the bloom time? Just wondered if anyone has tried it.

Also, I added a white flowering, fragrant, fall blooming variety into the mix last year. From reading here, I have a feeling that I might want to take that back out and move it someplace else. I'm guessing that's a Sweet Autumn and going to get way too big for where I have it. Unless someone can tell me that in zone 4, and with hard pruning each spring SAC will not get that big?

thanks,

d
