How do you use Savannah or other non-clinging clematis?

I just bought a Savannah clematis on a whim (it is my wife's name) and I have no experience with non-clinging Clematis. Any guidance, pictures or accounts of how you use this plant or one's like it would be great. What does the height given (4 ft) refer to? the sprawl? the height even if not supported? Could I grow this at the top of a retaining wall and let it tumble over the edge? can it operate as a groundcover and just sprawl? As you can tell, I am out of my element with this plant!

How nice....those are good ideas on how to grow the integrifolia's...you also can prop it between low growing shrubs, or inside a trellis. They look great leaning against a large rock or garden sculpture, large log,,,etc. The height is roughly how tall the stems grow.

Here's an earlier thread with ideas and pictures
