Regrowing Cut Back Clematis After Painting

I took a 20' clematis 'almondiia' [sic] off my garage for painting. I intended to re-hang it as it was, but we have to cut it back to allow for the cable junction box. So it had to be chopped to about 5' tall... which is basically all woody (ie. before most of the real 'leafy' bits even starts.)

So... do I just cut it down to the ground and let it regrow from the ground? Or do we leave it at 5' tall with basically just a lot of wood and few leaves?

TIA,
