When do I stop fertilizing my container Clems?

I have 2 Polish Spirits in 45 gallon containers of fast draining gritty mix. They were 4" plants in April and are now about 4 feet tall and thick with leaves, they bloomed profusely all summer but I think they have now stopped blooming.

I have been fertilizing every 2 weeks and they are doing well and still putting out new growth but I am guessing at some point I should stop fertilizing them to encourage them to go dormant for winter, is this correct? if so, when? I am in North Central Texas.

You should stop when they go brown, shed their leaves & go dormant. Please check out the excellent site of my friend, Marie Lambert for advice on growing Clematis in Containers.

Well I stopped in October as suggested and they are still thick and green.
Hmmm...hannesdp, it would appear that the calendar for South Africa is quite different than for Texas! In April-May mine are just coming to life - not going dormant, and if I pruned hard in July as suggested, I think they would surely die!

No, they wouldn't die, they would sprout out lush and thick but have delayed blooming.

South Africa is in the Southern Hemisphere so their seasons are reversed from the US in the Northern.
