Very sad clemmies

I recently purchased two clemtises from a mail order company that I have never bought clematis from before -- one was a Jackmanii and one was a Bourbon.

I'm having issues with both. First of all, the stem of the Jackmanii broke off immediately, so I just went ahead and planted the roots and then buried the vine nearby for the heck of it.

Was that the right move? Is there anything else I should do to ensure it does OK?

As for the Bourbon, she is NOT happy. Great soil, shaded roots, sun for the leaves but she is crispy and lying down. Is this just transplant shock?

I don't know what to do. I have not experienced this with the other clematises I have ordered and planted from other companies (Bluestone and Joy Creek).

For example, a SAC I planted about the same time from one of the above cos. (I forget which one) already has new growth.

Any advice appreciated.
