Montana grandiflora frost protection?

Greetings ...

I recently moved from relatively frost free California to Western Washington where temperatures have been plummeting the last few days. I brought two clematis montana grandiflora with me from California for sentimental reasons, and they've done well this first growing season.

I'm nuts about clematis but frankly know little about them. Would anyone happen to know whether montana grandiflora requires frost protection, and if so how I might accomplish that?

It doesn't require frost protection per se, i.e. it can take temps down to -10c. But I understand that in parts of the US with very cold winters it does not thrive. Google says Z6. So it depends on what your winter temps are likely to be.

All montanas grow perfectly fine in western WA without issue. No need for frost protection.
