You want to begin to water less in October, then even less in November. Put them on the cold basement floor, and water maybe only when bone dry if the plant looks like it is suffering. Then begin slowly watering again in March, gradually watering more often as the plant warms up.

When you transplant, put them in a WELL DRAINING soil that will not compact over time too. If you go to Container Gardening forum, you will see a great soiless mix recipe. Mine are doing GREAT! You will worry less about overwatering if your soil drains fast.
If you want it to flower next pring, just as bambi says, put on the basement floor is great, even on a table, just make sure it doesn't see a whole lot of light,more important than cold temps, therefore the reason for much less water. But, NEVER, never let them dry out to the point of bone dry, or the tips of your leaves will turn yellow. Over water, they still turn yellow. I watered mine every other week, when the soil was dry. I only give 6 hours of florescent lighting from November- March. I get nice big flower stalks and very healthy plants.
Feed only during spring to fall. Not in the winter, when you are trying to rest them.
If you plants on putting it outdoors for the summer, never in full sun, just in dabbled light, or early morning or late afternoon sun. They prefer light or shade.
That's it. Enjoy your new hobbie, for these plants are VERY rewarding every spring. All year if you have variegated ones too, such as I do !!!
