Awanda, how often do you have to water in the summer months using that recipe?

I usually water 2 -3 x per week during the summer months. I also mixed in some peat moss.

For seedlings: mix small bark, pumice, soiless mix. Add organic seed starter fertilizer to mix; very little, green sand if you have it and some chick grits. I know it is a lot but seedlings love it.
For older plants I am now using coconut coir chips with pumice and topping with micracle gro potting mix with aqua coir. mm

I used to use just ordinary potting soil. It worked just fine, and with that I only watered about twice a month. A couple years ago.....after reading some great articles by people who really know thier stuff (which I really don't), I changed to a mix of nice dirt, half rotted leaves and small chunk pine bark. With that, I do have to water more often, but it's alot easier to handle when I have to pot and un-pot twice a year. The plain soil did get pretty hard. Wow, these plants do get alot of roots! I have to move to bigger pots almost every year. In fact, my biggest plant is now really too big and heavy for me to handle so I've sort-of donated it to my church. I just leave it there in a nice spot, water it now and then, and don't try to move it around so much anymore. I hope it doesn't need a bigger pot too soon. I guess it's still mine, but when I go to Alaska in the summers, at least it has a home and someone to watch after it! The smaller ones I still plant outside for the summers. They do seem to like it.
