space and cost of community garden

I am starting a community garden at my local church. We will be sharing the entire space rather than dividing into individual plots. We are wanting to have enough food per person that participants could have fresh produce throughout the season and leftover produce to share with their neighbors and/or preserve for the winter. I realize there are many variables with the crop type and land productivity, but on average, how much space should we plan on per participant?

20 feet by 20 feet might be reasonable.

Hi bbgrey,

Here is a thought. How about, from the overall area the church will let you use, subtract the amount for pathways (three feet wide) and divide the remaining area by the number of people you have signed up or expect to sign up. Is each plot going to have its own water source or a common one? Will the plots be able to automate for irrigation? What is the overall area (length and width)? Who pays for what? I am interested because I want to organize the same thing here. Does anyone has experience with how the garden should operate? Aloha

I just rented a plot in Janesville Wi and that is 20 feet by 20 feet for $20! I think that is pretty good!

I just rented a 20 x 40 square foot garden plot for $15 for the summer. We are using a church lot and a kid that is getting his Eagle Scout is setting it up. They got irrigation piped to the lot and ran pvc down the middles of every 2 rows of plots. Each plot has a spigot and we supply our own hose. We have a lock box there (and we all have the combo.) with pvc repair supplies just in case. We elected a garden president to be in charge of updating us as necessary. I'm thinking I got a steal!

You guys are lucky, over here in NZ, the cost per square tends to be more expensive, though on saying that, we have alot of places that have fertile soil and great sun exposure in the summer. Would love to be able to rent land for this reason.

Here is a link that might be useful: My Garden
