Hi All! I have been receiving many messages per information on community gardens. Therefore, I hereby summarize some important issues:
1. Get under the umbrella of a local chapter of a fraternal
organization (Kiwanis, Optimist, Rotary, et.al.)
2. Get a community-based committee operational ASAP and be sure to include professionals, such as finance officers from banks, attorneys, doctors & dentists, board members of
corporations (all local people), etc. Do not make your committee too large and unwieldy (for decision-making).
3. Design a simplistic logo and print up business stationery
so you can solicit funds from businesses.
4. Get your not-for-profit or nonprofit status from the IRS,
whichever ID is best for your organization. It is not necessary to obtain a 501(c)(3) status unless your project is large.
5. Give presentations to community organizations and neighborhood associations.
These are just a few ideas. Also check http://www.horthelp.com and click on "Links" and then click on American Community Gardening Association.
