tear up old grass before new sod?

We planted grass last year. It has done terribly. We've actually "replanted" (raked and planted more.....and more...) a couple of times. It still is just not growing well.

We have decided to get sod. We will be laying it ourselves. Do we need to tear up our current grass before putting sod down? Or would you just put the sod over top?

We already have an automatic sprinkler system in place. We just need grass!

Personally, I'd think you would take up the old grass first. That way the new sod will have direct contact with the soil making it easier for the roots to get going. But, then, I've never laid sod. :-/

Kill, Till and Fill with soil amendments then put down new sod.
