Locations and Information

I am looking for locations of local community gardens near me, information on how they work, what to expect and/or information on how to start one in my community if I can't find a local one. I live in Granada Hill, the San Fernando Valley, So. California.

I have found one local garden in my area, but there is a very long waiting list that I am now added to. However, in looking from the outside in, I didn't get a good impression about the care of most of what I could see, there were some exceptions, but it has made me concerned about rules and regulations about different community gardens and since I know nothing about community gardening I am hoping I will get some response here, to give me at least a foundation.

Hope to learn a lot here... any suggestions will be appreciated.

Hi Carrie,

Wow, I am especially impressed with the UCCE Common Ground Garden Program and all their information... now that's what I call a grand foundation. ;-)

Thank you,

RE: Locations and Information

Marilyn91344,
We just started another community garden here in Springfield, Mass. The lot is a double lot where 2 houses once stood. Now its a vacant rock laden field. The head of the garden has set up 3 different size plots on the site. There are 14 4x10 raised bed (wood donated by home depot)and constucted by UMASS students (also Free) at $5.00 a year, 8 10x20 surface raised beds at $10.00 per year and 6 20x20 lots at $15.00 per year. We had compost donated by the local waste treatment and dump (composted leaves from the fall) We also had a tool shed donated by one of the parks and reassembled by the local jails Inmate pre-release program, they also cleand up the lot and will also(maybe) tilling the plots(for free). The Water department is also installing an on the site water spigot so that we dont have to bring in water. (I was told that that service was also going to be free). So what im trying to say there is a large potential to get alot of stuff donated all for the cost of a few phone calls. So let me know what you have acomplished becuase Id like to see how you have faired. I will also be posting a thread on the starting and progress of our community garden.

Happy Gardening
Mark
