Free knowledge Vs Paid knowledge

Posted by Big_Hanno QLD Aust (My Page) on

I belong to a community garden and believe that all the members should freely exchange knowledge between each other. Some of my fellow community gardeners beleive that they should be able to charge others for their knowledge. Having said that, I think reimbursement of costs for workshops is fine, but $$$ for the knowledge is WRONG.

What do other people think?

One of the things I love most about being at a community garden is the free exchange of ideas and information. That said, I find that there a some fellow gardeners that prefer not to interact much while at the garden. I've never run into anyone who wanted compensation for information, just gardeners who wanted to be left alone.

Big Hanno-

That is Plain Crazy. Who's allowing this to happen?..Compensation.
Wanting compensation for information. That takes the whole 'COMMUNITY' out of Community Gardens.
I have been Community Gardening for years. And set up our Community Gardens..any Information that I can share to other gardeners...I am happy to do so. That's what the biggest part of Community Gardening is all about..."LEARNING and SHARING". If these others are not into that, they're intentions of growing things in their gardens are for more reasons than just for eating.

You have some Rotten Tomatoes in your Gardens and their NOT growing on a Vine!

In the USA contact your local County Extension. You should be able to find them in the Government pages of the phone book. Our information is mostly free... there are a few charge publications, but not many.

Thats sad I grew up in NYC where gardening usually happens in a window box but was lucky enough to have had a community garden that had childrens plots. The older people with some knowledge shared it (I guess free market economy mentality) wasn't a community value in the early 60's. Currently I belong to a community garden where we all pitch in with gee what is that or I'll show you how to prune when it's the right time time. We have had to hire professionals for somethings but gardening with and for the community was I thought the idea of a community garden. For months we smelled the smoke from the World Trade Center I would have hated to think someone might have said If you pay me I'll tell you where the exits are ah well! as i said it's sad
