Do companion benefits still apply when not planted in same soil?

Hi!

I couldn't think of a succinct way to pose this question :) but I'm thinking about the invasiveness of mint and how much I would love to use it to repel pests if I could control it. I've seen suggestions of planting it into the ground within a small container (serving as a root barrier) and I'm wondering if that would somehow negate the effectiveness of it's properties? I think it would be adorable in a pot nestled amongst my flowers but again, is it no longer a good "companion" in that case?

This is my first rodeo - thanks so much for any advice!
