I have done tomatoes near basil, and it was okay, but not synergistic, as if they fueled each other.
you know about marigolds or calendula, otherwise known as 'pot marigolds,' being good to plant around tomatoes, right? They help with pests.
And there is the classic companion planting, the 'three sisters,' namely, corn with some kind of squash -zucchini brought it to mind- acting as a living mulch by shading the soil with beans or peas growing up the corn. It is very lovely and allows three types of yileds from one area.

I just saw where someone had planted out small broccoli and seeded the soil with spinach, chard and arugula at the same time. It created a lovely dual canopy effect.
