I planted some hens and chicks in a rock garden built into a slope at my last house in RI. I put alpine, small springtime bulbs and succulent-types in the garden and pruned the pre-existing invasive vinca into borders around the plants. For the fall, I added small annual mums for color. The borders highlighted the beauty of the miniature plants and shapely rocks. The 45' angle of the slope also displayed the contents of the garden nicely. The vinca border did get invasive, but it was dependable and cleaned up nicely for me after blooming and looked good all summer.

Thank you for the response, Diane. Somehow I missed it until now. Hens and Chicks have been an odd plant for me to combine with others, but you've given me some ideas. Your idea of adding rocks to that garden is definately a good idea too.

I have a concrete trough I made and planted with hens and chicks, 2 different mini hostas, a dianthus "Tiny Rubies", another sedum that is taller and flops around, and another sedum that is low to the ground and chartreuse. There are small gravel/rocks in gray that act as mulch. It is about 3 yrs old now and looks very nice now that it is filled out.

HI, I plant my hens and chicks along the edge of my perennial bed, it is raised and I find they help stop the soil from running off. Also as they multiply I keep moving them around, they will grow in the worst of soils and they always look beautifull.............Wayne

I have Sedum "baby tears" amoung my hens and chicks and the babys tears sedum spreads all through them and it looks very pretty.

I have hens and chicks, sedum and euphorbia together. They all have red on them. It looks really nice and seems to be doing ok.

I have a vegetable bed built with raised cement blocks. I used the holes in the concrete to plant hens and chicks and thyme in. They did much better than those in my clay soil. They frame the veggies in the bed. :-)
