fennel as a companion

I've read here and there that fennel makes a poor companion to other plants...that it sucks out all of the nutrients from the soil, and other plants are deprived. Is this true? I have fennel in my butterfly garden. Some of its companions are ok, and some look like they could do better. What's your experience?
