What comes after spring ephemerals?

Posted by Mudpuppy42 z7 NC (My Page) on

I live with lots of shade, and I do love my little woodland gardens. I have many spring ephemerals that I love dearly, but of course they appear early, do their thing, and then dispappear for the remainder of the season. I need help with what to plant with them that will appear about the time they are going into summer dormancy. Any suggestons?

Hostas and fern fill this role well. Both are later to come up and fill out for the season. Annual Nicotianna is also very nice and will often reseed.

Check this thread on what you could plant http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/shade/msg0200495914248.html
Also in the shade forum there's a list of summer and fall blooming perennials........ perennials I think...... :)......

Your page doesnt say what area of NC you are in, but if you are near me (I'm just outside W-S) we could do some swapping of woodland plants. My woodland garden has Daffodils surrounded by Vinca Minor, and Helebore. I accidentally dropped a few cuttings of Wandering Jew (yes, the houseplant) and they rooted! They look fantastic growing up thru the Azaleas. I plan to ad Virginia Bluebells, ferns and white Bleeding Heart.

Here is a link that might be useful: garden photos

The azalea and wandering jew do make a pretty combination. Is the wj winter hardy in your zone?
