I let my volunteer Chard (no till garden) come up next to tomatoes... no problem there... chard can get pretty big, so you need to keep it picked I reckon. I started some inside in a long narrow container this spring, and it seems happy there! Needs a lot of sun and water... keep those containers watered from underneath. I'm experimenting every year with more container stuff (gettin' old!) and water seems to be the main thing.

I grow my "Bright Lights" Swiss chard in my flower beds, even alongside roses! So I think they make good companions to anything :)

I know this is an ancient thread, but I wanted to point out that you're not supposed to grow Swiss Chard near cucurbits (cucumbers, squash, melons, gourds), and that it can be problematic with some herbs that need high nutrition.

Other than that, it's one of the best companion plants, maintaining ground humidity and attracting beneficial insects.

I am growing chard with cilantro ...cilantro is doing good but Chard seems to be infected ..leafs have holes and yellowish..whitish stuff :( ..steams seem to be ok ..not sure what to do? it's my first vegetable garden. Please help, thanks :)
