Shrubs, screens under Ash trees

I have 2 ash trees that are about 20 years old. The lowest branches are about 7 or 8 feet high. I'd like to plant some shrubs a few feet away from the trunks that I can use as a screen to section off my yard. The shrubs would get full sun in the afternoon. What would grow there that would compete successfully with the tree roots without harming the trees?

I'm planning on trying Ribes sanguineum.

To totalchaos: Thanks for the tip. I must admit, I never would have thought of that. But it sounds promising. I especially like the point that they're drought tolerant.
