Companion Shrubs for Shady Perennial Garden

I am looking for some advice.

I just finished designing a woodland perennial garden, when I realized that I hadn't put in anything for winter interest.

The whole bed is about 36' long and 3 to 12' deep.

The bed is a mix of ferns, hosta, astillbe, and lungwort underneath three massive black walnut trees. It sits in front of a chain link fence behind which is the neighbors (weed filled) property.

My problem is that in the winter when everything dies off, there will be nothing interesting to look at, except the chain link fence.

I am trying to think of some shrubs with good winter interest, but everything I think of feels funny relative to all of the perennials, any input would be much appreciated.

Dave
