How far away should onions be from beans?

I don't want my onion crop to stunt my bean crop. How far away is enough? A few feet? A whole bed? I have most my non-tomato/squash garden set up in raised beds that are 4x12 feet. The first six feet on one side is onions. All the way at the other end of the next six feet are some beans. I just bought some leek sets (silly impulse buys). Can I put them next to the onions and shorten my distance to the beans to four feet away? Or is this too close? Will it make a difference with a buffer crop (basil and amaranth) in between the beans and the onions? Anyone had experience with this?

Basil likes it hot not sure if you have enough sun and heat between those.Can you orient your garden to plant in rows North / South rather than East / West? Then you can put shorter in south and longer north.That way you get the most of it..

Just in case someone else is searching for the answer to this question:

I planted the beans four feet from the leeks and the rest of the onions, with basil and amaranth in between. The beans are currently trying to take over the world. They are huge and have tons of blossoms. The basil and onions/leeks also look great, so at the very least, four feet seems to be fine.

Good to know, Bella! Your initial question really got me curious and I looked everywhere for an answer with no luck. Since I've never planted beans near onions or leeks I had no practical experience. I was thinking that 3' to 4' would work, but didn't feel sure enough of this to say so. I'm so glad to hear your garden's doing well - and thanks again for the excellent info!
