Good Companion Plants in Vegetable Garden

Posted by Sarah - RSA(9?) (sdebruin@mj.org.za) on Fri, Jul 7, 00 at 4:05
I came across a handy list in one of my books (Food From Your Garden, by JG Simpson). Examples:
Apples with Chives = Less chance of apple scab disease
Beans with Marigold = Repels beetles
Anyone wanting a copy of this list, e-mail me.

A couple of wonderful books on this type of companion planting: "Carrots Love Tomatoes" and (more with flowers than veggies, i think) "Roses Love Garlic" both by Louise Riotte. I learned a lot about vegetable gardening from these books; hope you can find them.

I would like a copy of that list. Please send it to my email address: thesill@yahoo.com I was reading that French Marigolds, common vetch, castor beans, and rapeseed are all good for detering harmful nematodes. The vetch and others can be grown as green manures during fall and early spring and tilled into the soil before planting. The french marigolds should be rotated annually with your food crops susceptible to nematodes. In other words, first year plant a row of French marigolds, next year plant your food crops in that row and switch the Fr. Marigolds to a different row, etc.

I would also like the list(s). We gave up trying to grow beans because of the ant problem and we do not like to spray. (The dish soap and water remedy works only for a short time.) As far as nematodes are concerned, I once heard that an idea from the far east is to put a teaspoon of sugar in the bottom of each hole before you plant the seedling , especially tomato. Actually, I've never tried it, I just buy VFN, (verticullum, fusarium, and Nematode- resistant) seedlings. I always wondered if foods which combine well in cooking, might possibly be good companion plants in the garden. For instance, beans and sage. L... Oh yes, my e-mail is lostudio@hotmail.com Thanks for the offers of the lists.

Thank you for the list, Sarah. When I read about the companion plants for grapes, it reminded me of the time my father, a grape rancher, planted sweet peas between the rows of the muscats. When they were in bloom, I always walked through the vineyard on my way home from elementary school and brought a large bunch of sweet peas in the house; they smelled so sweet. The farmers planted the peas at times to replenish the nitrogen in the soil. The list looks like a good one, thanks again, laa.
