Peas/Beans and Onions

Hello-

I keep reading that legumes and alliums don't get along well. Is it true that it is the alliums that are bad for the legumes but not vice-versa? I am trying my hand at growing some fall and overwintering things whilst still maintaining a healthy crop rotation and I don't have very many beds (only 5 for a total of 80 square feet) yet so I have to be creative in how I cram things around.

My plan is to plant the alliums (garlic and overwintering onions) after the legumes are harvested. This should be ok right? Then with a crop rotation neither will see this area for at least a few years. If this is a good plan then I will just make it the standard cycle- grow the alliums after the legumes- then I can have both!!

As for the legumes- can I just turn them all under when the season is over? This year we focused on bush beans. I am trying to decide if I am supposed to turn them under or cut them out and send them to the compost bin.

Thanks for your help,

Katrina
