New England Aster - Purple dome

I have a nice New England aster....about 3 years old....looks great...great blooms in the fall....but the bottom 8 inches looks terrible when all the old leaves die. What's a good companion to put directly infront of it?

armeria has nice foliage and flowers......any spring blooming plants that foliage would hide it..... heuchera.......
