Companion plants for bleeding hearts

Help! I have a beautiful bleeding heart garden by my front door...until it goes dormant (now) and I have to cut it back. What can I plant with it that'll be beautiful when I cut them back? I've tried hostas (2 years since I planted them and they're just not growing under the bleeding hearts), ferns also didn't work out. I'm in zone 5b and we have fairly claylike soil. Need something that is no wider than 3-4 feet. This area receives no direct sunlight. Thanks!
